Sacred Heart University’s College of Education has changed over the summer and it is getting bigger and better than ever! As of July 1, Sacred Heart created The Farrington College of Education, named for Isabelle Farrington, a teacher and strong supporter of education. The Farrington College of Education focuses on field-based teacher and administrator preparation programs and has expanded to the state-of-the-art, 50,000 square-foot Cambridge Campus.

The Farrington College of Education has also earned full accreditation from the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). This is the organization responsible for professional accreditation of teacher education. NCATE-accredited schools must meet rigorous standards set by the profession and members of the public.

Sacred Heart University is the top independent educator of teachers and administrators in Connecticut and annually recommends about 300 students for teaching certifications. Candidates also have the highest pass rate for the state’s required Reading Literacy Test.

Two teacher certification programs are offered — Elementary School Program, preparing teachers in grades K-6, and the secondary School Program, preparing teachers in academic subjects in grades 7-12.

One of their most popular and unique programs is the Graduate Teacher Internship Program. The Internship Program is designed for students who are completing their initial certification program after they have earned their bachelor’s degree. The program places over 200 interns in schools each year.

This program is for anyone — whether right out of college or changing careers. Candidates complete their teacher certification and master’s degree program requirements in the classroom followed by a year as an intern in a local school system. Students can earn a Connecticut teacher certification and/or a master’s in teaching in under two years with graduate tuition paid by the school system sponsoring the internship!

The Farrington College of Education offers many other educational programs. Check out the website at www.sacredheart.edu/graduate to find the option that’s perfect for you!.
