Stamford Hospital’s Women’s Breast Center offers
compassionate and comprehensive breast care supported by
leading-edge technology and clinical excellence. The
facility is one of five, out of the state’s 133 breast
imaging centers, to have been designated a Breast
Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of
Radiology. The National Accreditation Program for Breast
Centers of the American College of Surgeons has
recognized Stamford Hospital as the first Accredited
Center in the country.
The center provides advanced technology to provide
the most accurate screening and diagnostic breast
imaging. They offer Breast MRI with the highest
resolution images available in Fairfield County, digital
mammography that can image large-breasted women,
advanced computer assisted detection software, and
equipment and procedures for minimally invasive
biopsies.
Their multi-disciplinary approach is dedicated to
treating breast disease and is comprised of an expert
team that includes: sub-specialized fellowship-trained
female breast surgeons, reconstructive plastic surgeons,
breast imaging fellowship-trained radiologists, expert
breast pathologists, medical and radiation oncologists,
a nurse navigator and a genetic counselor. The team
meets at weekly cancer conferences to discuss the best
possible individualized treatment for each patient.
The Stamford Hospital Breast Center is located at 30
Shelburne Road in Stamford. For more information, call

www.stvincents.org
The new Elizabeth Pfriem SWIM Center for Cancer Care
is designed to consolidate cancer prevention,
diagnostic, treatment and survivorship services in one
convenient and attractive location. Their
multidisciplinary approach to breast cancer care is
unique because it follows a program of regular,
face-to-face meetings where cases are presented and
reviewed at multiple key points throughout the patient’s
workup and treatment. St. Vincent’s Medical Center has
earned Breast Center of Excellence accreditation from
the National Accreditation Program for Breast Cancer.
Three initiatives were created as part of the
accrediting process including: the establishment of a
weekly breast conference where all suspected or
diagnosed cases of cancer are discussed by the team; a
coordination with the Breast Clinic at St. Vincent’s
Family Health Center so under-served area residents with
breast cancer can be seen by surgeons and medical
oncologists; and implementing the Breast Care Nurse
Navigator Program where specially trained nurses help
patients and their families understand and manage their
treatment plan and serve as support in other ways.
Support group meetings for breast cancer patients and
their families are offered, along with a breast cancer
surgery and wellness program for survivors who have
recently undergone surgery or those who are further
along in their recovery.
St. Vincent’s Medical Center is located at 2800 Main
Street in Bridgeport. For more information, call the

St.
Vincent’s Medical Center

www.stvincents.org
St. Vincent’s Medical Center recently received
the designation as a Baby-Friendly™ Hospital by the
World Health Organization and United Nations Children’s
Fund through their global Baby-Friendly Hospital
Initiative. Baby-Friendly hospitals provide guidance in
helping parents to make informed choices about how to
feed and care for their babies. Babies in the Family
Birthing Center remain in the mother’s room (rooming in)
throughout their stay to make it easier to learn about
baby’s feeding cues and to promote mother-infant
bonding.
For premature†infants or those with problems, St.
Vincent’s has a fully equipped Special Care Nursery and
two neonatologists, or pediatricians specializing in the
care of premature newborns or those needing intensive
care and monitoring, covering 24/7.
At St. Vincent’s, the experienced staff encourage
“skin to skin” care, a best practice that encourages
contact between mother and baby. This, along with the
practice of rooming in, adds to the new parents’
confidence in caring for their newborn, and also gives
the birthing unit a quiet and serene atmosphere.
The Family Birthing Center offers baby care classes,
childbirth preparation and breastfeeding classes,
expectant parent and sibling tours, infant massage and
mother-baby support groups.
St. Vincent’s Medical Center is located at 2800 Main
Street in Bridgeport. For more information, call
