This month should be known as Octob-eerie!! All the little ghosts and goblins come out of hiding for some fun tricks and lots of treats! But you don’t have to wait until October 31 to enjoy this month. With the leaves at their peak bursting with reds and golds, you can get out and experience the season before the serious leaf raking begins. Most kids are off for Columbus Day, so this is a great time to get outdoors and enjoy the fabulous fall activities. Don’t miss this issue filled with everything you’ll need to scare up some spooktacular fun.

Fairfield County is bursting with activities from apple picking and visits to the pumpkin patch, to getting lost in a corn maze. While you’re piling the kids in the car to check out your favorite spots, make sure they are safe and secure in the back seat. Chances are they are strapped into a car or booster seat, but is it properly secured and installed? Discover how to buy, install and use your car seat so you can all safely travel through life together. This is a very busy time of year with school, sports and everything else you have going on in your life. But stop what you’re doing and take time to enjoy some fall family fun. There’s all this and more right in your own backyard.

In the Great Leaders in Education section, you’ll meet the headmasters and learn why an independent school might be just what you’re looking for. Read about all of the wonderful, local independent schools right here. These professional educators work hard to give their students the best education possible. And check out the Field Trip Guide for some terrific ideas. All students, whether in public or private school, get an extra boost in learning when they go on field trips. Academics come alive when they are experienced first hand.

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It is a known fact that mammograms save lives. But there are other tools available (in conjunction with a mammography) that can give an even clearer picture, so you can be your “breast self.”

Not everyone is athletic, but if your child wants to be part of a team, what choice does she have? Theater! Whether you have a drama king or queen in your house or someone who likes to work behind-the-scenes, participating in the performing arts offers opportunities for every interest and talent. Besides theater, how about getting your child interested in a good book? Even the most reluctant readers will be transformed into bookworms when they check out the modern, middle-grade, adventures and fantasies that the Milford Public Library has selected.

Happy Halloween! It’s a “boot-iful” time of year to get out and enjoy some new adventures. The Family Fun Calendar has a month-ful of ideas that will make you fall in love with fall.
